VGAP News
[Jan 2008] - the main news over the last year has been that Magik has taken over most of the coding of the game, although Tim retains ownership / control, and bug fixes have accelerated. Gabor Toroe and Sebastian Ulmer are working on a new combat engine to address issues of unrealistic behaviour in battles, which should give new options such as fleets working more intellignetly in combat. Tim's brother Kenneth announced he has finished the artwork for the Others, the Controlers, the Earthers, the Confederation of Non-Aligned Aliens, and the Hand of Gloom. Those races have about twenty ships each and plenty of new structures and goodies.
[Early 2006 - out of chronological sequence I'm afraid but extremely important] The main Planets site has moved: Tim's ISP has gone bust or something and he no longer has access to the old URL: despite theoretically owning it, he can't upload files to it! So he set up a new site at www.planets4.com where you will find the latest Hosts, etc. Confusingly, the old Planets site, www.vgaplanets.com, is still there - but claims the latest Host is about 190 or so - which has confused many people unaware of the new site!
[May 2006] Host 196: Tim may appear to be hibernating in a cryopod. But hints have leaked out [from people who've corresponded with him about specific bugs needing fixing] that he is in fact tidying up bits of code to do with Master.exe, ground assault etc.
[Early 2006] The AI, or computer player, built into Host 194 is the most significant Big News in the last year. It's a half decent player. What I like about it is, it is rather unpredictable. You can't just take it for granted. It keeps trying to kill its neighbours and does not know when it is beaten. It's a huge improvement on the old sstem where players who dropped out essentially bequeathed an entire emire of loot to their neighbours, and it is a good way for Newbies to start learning the game.
