Introduction,Disclaimer
and Content Warning
The Genest Campaign is a series of RPG adventures played by 5-6 players between 1992-5 and still to be concluded. The games are set in the world of Glorantha, a fantasy setting published by Chaosium and used by many gamers, which aids play by allowing us to draw on a common pool of creative material. Rules used are house-variants on RQ2/3.
The playing region is a slightly geographically altered Bindle in Lunar Carmania. We previously ran a long campaign based around the Sun County Yelmalion lands in Sartar where the Lunars were pretty much seen as the bad guys.... so this time we wanted to experience the true peace and joy that the Lunar way can bring...we're still looking!
As the campaign unfolded, we archived our adventures in 'Game Memos' which are reproduced here. These were originally simply aides memoire for the players to help keep track of what had gone before, as we only played once a month and things got increasingly complex. They developed into a pseudo-village-newspaper we called The Genest Times, full of in-jokes which will make little sense to readers unfamiliar with Glorantha and /or this Campaign. However, you may still find them amusing as an insight into what Role Playing Gamers get up to behind locked doors. You can skip straight past most of the in-jokes by clicking to the Summary sections. We hope RPG'ers reading these will find some sparks of ideas they can incorporate into their own campaigns.
The memos follow the players' exploits as they develop from oppressed young peasants into oppressed older peasants, attempting to improve their lot through a succession of dodgy exploits, working for powerful people or cults, and sucking up to the local Lord (eh, Charlie?). As the campaign progresses, in among the trivia of their daily lives, they very gradually realise there are several plots afoot in the area, ranging from a political struggle for control of land to Vampires summoning Demons , and maybe they can influence the outcomes to their own ends...which are various...
Disclaimer. Purist Gloranthaphiles will no doubt object that our version of Bindle/Carmania is not like the 'official' one described by Glorantha Gurus these days. Tough. Not only do I prefer a more feudal-European / Roman feel for my campaign, but despite extensive research during setting the Campaign up in 1990-1, I had no idea that the area would develop a more 'Persian' feel to it a year or so later. We decided to stick to Plan A. All quibblers will be fed to the Bat. Our universe developed along our own non-canonical lines, as must all campaigns once launched. So there!
One Word of Warning. These documents were not originally written with non-adult, non-playing readers in mind. Occasional descriptions of crimes, crucifixions, evil cults etc. may offend conservative readers... although we think they are pretty mild. At the time they added a lighthearted flavour of corruption, excess and depravity to the background to emphasize the moral decay of the player-characters' society, particularly the Nobility against which the players were to pit themselves. Sadly, the players were not themselves perfect either...as usual!
